ENVIRONMENTAL
INCIDENT SYSTEM (EIS) DATABASE
GDM’s EIS database contains information on all release incidents
involving pipelines, wells and facilities. Data is provided by the ERCB
and contains information on all incidents since 1975. Among the data contained
in the database are:
- Incident location;
- Dates of incident, notification and clean-up completion;
- Type of facility (e.g. pipeline, well, facility);
- License data (e.g. pipeline approval and line number,
well license number);
- Cause (e.g. corrosion, digging, natural phenomena, defect);
- Number of injuries and fatalities;
- Operator at time of incident and current operator;
- Pipe attributes;
- Substances discharged, with volumes released and recovered;
- Responsible authorities;
- Effects on environment and surrounding area;
- Inspection information.
For pipelines, the data can be linked to the main GDM pipeline
database and hence to the pipeline location data. This, along with the
actual incident locations, allows visualization of incident data. This
linkage also allows current operators to be viewed. Similarly, the well
license allows linkage to a well database.
The detailed breakdown of incident cause and released substances,
along with the supplied attribute data such as pipeline material and dimensions,
enables detailed statistical analysis and reporting of incidents to be
performed. Knowledge of all local incidents also provides valuable information
when discussing performance with ERCB inspection staff.
The database is updated monthly by GDM.
